Dylan Besson (22y.o):
How did you feel when you arrived?
Well, I actually felt great. New experience, first time away from home… Euphoria would be the word! But soon came a bunch of bad feelings: homesickness, sadness, and even some kind of fear…
How did you cope with these bad feelings?
The first two days I tried to build myself what we could call a “comfort zone”. I just stood on the sofa and spent hours on Youtube… I think it is part of our instinct to hide behind something we know when one is somewhere without any landmark. But then I just woke up and decided to live the moment. Going out for instance was a way to feel better. I honestly love being in Birmingham now!
What was the main difficulty you encountered?
Being in a huge city. I am used to living in a small one and felt a bit lost sometimes.
How was it to get in your workplace?
Great. It is a brand new experience which I cherish everyday. My colleagues are just amazing. I really feel like this experience is giving me opportunities I would not have had by staying in France.
What tips would you give to other students who would like to work abroad?
Not to be affraid. You are never alone or left behind if you remain open minded and sociable. Just keep in mind that waaaaaay back in history our ancestors used to travel everyday. Which makes it part of our genes. 😉
Jade Geoffroy Jacob (21 y.o):
What were your expectations before your departure?
I really want to get some real professional experience after college and ready myself for real work.
What is your professional project?
I’ts still a litle bit unclear but I have always been atracted to books and therefore I would love to work with a publishing house and become an editorialist.
Do you think this experience will give you opportunities later?
I think I’m creating a social circle thanks to the company so I believe this will be useful when I’ll be looking for a job later.
According to you, how long one should stay abroad? (minimum)
The perfect duration is between 2-6 months. It depends on your ability to be away from your friends and family.
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Advantages : Meeting new people, learning new skills
Disadvantages : Being in an unknown environment
